Love the views out the windshield at the cars adjacent. Good shot of this Saab. I live in Portland now and there's a guy just east of me on NE Skidmore maybe around 22nd who has two of more Saabs. A 96 sedan painted silver (like from a spray can!) and another under cover. He also has a Sonnet covered up but unmistakable. I grew up in Winston-Salem, NC and in 1960 my dad bought a light gray Saab 95 wagon. It had the freewheel feature but it also had this stick down near the throttle where when it was pulled out the freewheeling feature was turned off and it acted like a regular car slowing us down on the hills. The radiator was in the middle of the engine (presumably due to cold Sweden winters) and the distrivutor was right behind the little front grille. There was this chain coming out of the dashboard that when pulled drew a curtain up the inside of the hood blocking rain and snow from coming into the grille and wrecking the distributor - they really needed to move the distributor. It had 3 cylinders and a carburetor for each one! Zoom zoom way before Mazda. It had leaf springs all around and was as tough as a little truck with its rear end jacked up a bit. It had a slot air dam at the top of the rear hatch to direct air over the rear window to keep it clear of dust or whatever. It got great mileage and it came with little cans of oil where we had to add one to each 8 gallons of gas - sounded like a lawnmower/motorcycle. It was a trip until I wrecked it in 1968. My dad had the engine removed, we fiberglassed over the firewall, had a hitch installed and used it as a trailer. Amazing rig.

Thank you for this photo. I have been hunting one for a long time. My dad had a Mobil station in Manson, Iowa and always had a "beater" for us boys to drive as we all worked at the station (got a few bucks, a car to drive and free gas for our labor!). I was 16 or 17 (1959 or 1960) when the '47 Chevy Fleetline that we were driving "got sick with a rod knocking" so Dad went to the Chevy dealer across the street and came back with a '49 Deluxe Fastback 4-Door. My brother Denny and I put a lot of miles on it! Thanks again.

Hey, that's me driving! This is a fun car. Definitely not a track car but very nice on Skyline or Germantown road with the top down. The early 80s cars had a lot of problems which is too bad because the cars improved in the late 80s and then stopped being sold in the US. Oh well. Now it's an oddity, and I wonder if I have the only 1987 Spyder in Portland.

In 1964-65 we visited Auto Engineering in Lexington, Mass.
On their display room floor was the James Bond Aston Martin.
As a lad of 12, I banged my shin on the extended axle weapon
thus prompting a 'give the car a shake' to check the suspension.

Everything on the car rattled .. my Dad came over quickly to
escort me to the 356 he was planning to buy:

I own and drive a 1951 Bentley and one year attended a rally in Washington State. As I pulled into the parking lot, I saw a brand new Bentley Continental GT so I parked next to it and got out of my car. Then I heard the gasps from people across the lot - "Oh gee, look at the Bentley!!" as they gathered to look at my car and ignore the new one. I felt bad for the new Bentley's owner, he told me he had paid $225,000 for it just a few weeks ago and not only was it ignored in the presence of my well over 50 year old example, but the week before he had suffered the indignity of getting a parking ticket where the officer described his car as a Chrysler on the citation!

Ah, yes the 1968 (still had the sheetmetal grille, rather than the later slatted grille ) white 95 with red, gray and plaid interior. I loved that car, but it broke my heart. After a failed transaxle, it refused every ring and pinion transplant that I tried in it. it ate transaxles like potato chips. I finally sold it (in 1998 perhaps ?) when I found the 73 BMW 2002 that is still serving as my daily driver.

And for the record, the previous owner (original owner) was not homely, but a quite dapper Sigmund Freud looking individual, who sported a white Van Dyke and worked at the airport in a baggage handling capacity.

thanks boice !

yeah, i'm pretty impressed with the iPhone camera..... mind you these images have not been cropped, photo-shopped, color-corrected or otherwise manipulated in any manner, they are presented just as they were shot straight outta the camera.

the thing i like about this 1949 deluxe fast-back is its not hot-rodded at all.... totally stock and retains that stream-line 40's style.

my friend Denny and his Dad built a 327 chevy motor and put it in a 1950 ford.

it was 60% hot rod. ahhhh. the summer in Indiana. this car has a similar style. but the fastback is beautiful.

what nice photos that iPhone takes.
